[1] This divine jewel called Kaustubha came up in the middle of ghee and stayed in the breast of Visnu, spreading its rays everywhere. (Maha-bharata, Adi Parva, Chapter 18, Stanza 37). This happened during the churning of the ocean by the demigods and demons. The Kaustubha is also mentioned in the Agni Purana and in the Ramayana of Valmiki.
