The mentality of committing offenses relying on the strength of the Holy Name
Nama-bale papa-buddhi
Whoever commits papa[1] by virtue of the Name cannot purify himself.
Glories to Gaura-Gadadhara and the Life of Jahnava[2]. Glory to Sita and Advaita and the devotees.
Accepting the Name removes all Anarthas
Nama-grahane samasta anartha dura haya
Hari Dasa said: The Name is composed of pure goodness[3]. A fortunate Jiva takes shelter of the Name.
Very quickly his anarthas will drift away[4] and weakness will leave one’s heart.
With firm attachment to the Name, he will not be inclined to engage in impure activities. His previous offenses will be burned away, and his consciousness will become extremely pure[5].
Mercy towards all the Jivas manifests itself in the heart and always works for their auspiciousness.
The Name cannot tolerate the suffering of the Jivas and tries to relieve them of their miseries.
The thirst for material pleasures becomes weak and the desires of the senses cannot remain in the heart.
The Jiva feels disgusted by the efforts to obtain wealth and women. He maintains his life by being satisfied with whatever he obtains from the practices of his dharma.
He accepts all activities favorable to bhakti and does not accept those activities unfavorable to bhakti.
He thinks: I know that Krishna is my only protector. Krishna is the protector of my life.
In his heart he does not retain mental attachments of ‘I’ and ‘mine’. In a humble mood, he chants the Name at all times[6].
Previous sins and traces of sins flee very quickly
Purva-papa o papa-gandha sighra dura haya
His previous inclinations gradually diminish. His nature quickly purifies and he becomes intelligent.
During this period there may still be some connections with past sinful activities, and traces of these misdeeds remain for a while[7].
When a correct connection with the Name appears, every trace of sin is quickly destroyed.
Krishna said to Arjuna: My devotee will never perish. In the moment of danger, I will help him. Thus, by My mercy, the results of his misdeeds will vanish.
Those who pursue the path of jnana struggle to purify themselves of their sins, but because they do not want to accept Your help, they inevitably fall.
Those great personalities who take refuge in You have no obstacles. This is the final statement of Sastra.
Atonement is not required for those who engage in offenses out of foolishness
Pramade papa upasthita haile tahara prayascittera prayojana nai
If out of foolishness, a devotee still commits sins, he need not perform the austerities of prayascitta[8].
This momentary sin does not remain. Immersed in nama-rasa, he will not receive any negative reaction.
[1] We have already explained what is meant by papa, activities that are negative and contrary to our own interests.
[2] Nityananda Prabhu.
[3] Suddha-sattva.
[4] That is, they will distance themselves from his consciousness.
[5] Papa-bija (or papa-vasana) comes from avidya, and from papa-vasana comes papa, sinful activities. These three things give suffering to the Jiva.
[6] The illusory identification with the material body inevitably causes a sense of possession, which is also illusory, because sooner or later everything will be lost.
[7] When one becomes attracted to the Name of Krishna, one partially enters a stage in which there is a previous state and a present state. This is known as sandhi-kala, the intermediate time. During that time, one is not attracted to pursue sinful activities. This attraction gradually fades.
[8] Atonement.
