The characteristics of bhakti-yoga are described in Srimad-Bhagavatam (1.2.12 and 1.2.7) as follows:
tac chraddadhana munayo

bhaktya sruta-grhitaya
vasudeve bhagavati
bhakti-yogah prayojitah
janayati asu vairagyam

The Absolute Truth is realized by the wise disciple who inquires seriously and, with the practice of devotional service and listening to Vedanta-sruti, arms himself with knowledge and detachment. Whoever serves the Supreme Lord, Lord Krishna, with love and devotion, quickly acquires knowledge and detachment by His grace.
After receiving the sadhu’s mercy, chanting the holy name with faith, one feels aversion to material concepts and realizes one’s eternal constitutional position. This is known as the highest platform of bhakti-yoga. By gradually advancing through the various levels of bhakti, this level of perfection is reached.
