Question
Maharaji I’m reading your book “Brilliant as the Sun” I would like to know more about the title…
if this title is part of some famous sloka ?
Answer
Brilliant as the sun is a very nice translation of the word “arka” that we find in Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.43.
The complete verse is the following:
kṛṣṇe sva-dhāmopagate
dharma-jñānādibhiḥ saha
kalau naṣṭa-dṛśām eṣa
purāṇārko ‘dhunoditaḥ
“This Bhāgavata Purāṇa is as brilliant as the sun, and it has arisen just after the departure of Lord Kṛṣṇa to His own abode, accompanied by religion, knowledge, etc. Persons who have lost their vision due to the dense darkness of ignorance in the age of Kali shall get light from this Purāṇa.”
Arka is a name for the sun, which is made of light. When the rays of this beautiful star arrive, the darkness of the night disappears.
At the beginning of Srimad-Bhagavatam the sages of Naimisaranya asked six questions and one of those was: “now that Sri Krishna has abandoned the planet, where will we find transcendental knowledge?”
This verse answers saying “in the Srimad-Bhagavatam”.
So Srimad-Bhagavatam is as brilliant as the Sun.
