calasi yad vrajac carayan pasun
nalina-sundaram natha te padam
sila-trnankuraih sidatiti nah
kalilatam manah kanta gacchati
Dear master, dear lover, when You leave the shepherds’ village to take the cows to pasture, our minds are disturbed at the thought that Your feet, more beautiful than the lotus, will be stung by the pointed ears of corn, the rough grass and the other plants.
Not seeing Krishna’s beautiful face decorated with curls of hair, for the gopis a moment seems like hundreds of yugas.
This sentiment is expressed by the gopis in Srimad-Bhagavatam (10.31.15):
atati yad bhavan ahni kananam
truti yugayate tvam apasyatam
kutila-kuntalam sri mukham ca te
jada udiksatam paksma-krd drsam (15)
When You leave for the forest during the day, not seeing You anymore, for us a split second becomes like a millennium. And even when we can look eagerly at Your beautiful face, gracefully embellished with curls, our desire is hindered by the eyelids, created by the foolish creator.
The very high position of gopi-bhava is designed for Krishna’s pleasure only. An example of the bhava of the gopis is found in Srimad-Bhagavatam (10.31.19):
