Holy Name Story: The Previous Life of Sage Valmiki

In his previous life, prior to becoming a hunter and a great sage, this young saintly boy rishi kumara was studying in his guru’s ashram.

A brahmana was living near that ashram.

So, one day while the brahmana was working with a weapon, the weapon fell and hit a calf who died.

The brahmana felt very distressed for causing pain to another living entity.

Everyone started speaking how this brahmana had killed the calf.

The brahmana was thinking that the best thing to do would be to finish his life, but he went to the sage in the nearby ashram to ask him what to do.

When he got to the ashram, the sage, Rishi Kumara, was absent. He has gone for a few days, but Valmiki, the boy was there.

The brahmana asked, “Where is the rishi?” and Valmiki replied that he had gone for few days.

“What is the matter?” asked Valmiki.

The brahmana said, “It is an important matter, so I will wait for the sage.”

As Valmiki, the young 12 years old boy, insisted asking what the matter was, the brahmana explained what had happened.

“Oh, what you have done is not a problem! Just say ‘Rama’ four times and you will be released from your bad deed!” Valmiki said.

The brahmana became very happy, “Oh, only by saying Rama four times my sin will go away!”

The brahmana went to his home and chanted Rama and became happy.

When the sage returned to the ashram, he asked the boy if anyone had come asking for him during those days.

“Oh, nobody, just one brahmana who killed a calf. I told him that he just needs to chant the name of Rama four times, and he would be free from his sin”, said Valmiki.

By hearing this, the sage became very furious and angry.

“Get out from this place!” “You have no faith in the holy name of Rama!” “You advise him to chant Rama four times!” “Oh, why, one time is not enough?” You need faith! Said the great sage.

So, the sage cursed boy:

“You will need to accept the body of a hunter, but you will chant the name of Rama, and in this way, you will be liberated.”

Moral of the story:

1) We should be very careful in causing distress to any living entity because that will also be the cause for our own suffering in life.

2) Be careful with giving advice to others. By giving advice we become very much responsible for what people do after that.

3) The holy name of Rama is supremely powerful. But we should not make offense thinking that we can do any bad thing we want, and that by chanting we will be free from all bad karma.

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare

Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

PS: I humbly request all the devotees to please forward and share this moral / instructive story so that everyone can be benefited by hearing about Krishna and his dear devotees.
