Many trees are designated as sacred . Kadamba’ is one such tree associated with Lord Krishna. The flowers are offered in temples and used in the festivals.
In order to fulfill the desires of the gopis to have Him as husband, Krishna very mercifully stole their clothes on one fine day when they were taking their baths , and brought them upon a Kadamba tree. Devotees of Vrindavan worship this tree.
The tree has immense medicinal values besides being a beautiful ornamental tree with scented golden ball like floral heads. A postal stamp has also been issued by the Department of Posts to commemorate its importance.
The tree, native to South and Southeast Asia, is widely distributed in different parts of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.
Quickly taking the girls garments Krishna climbed to the top of the kadamba tree. Then, as He laughed loudly and his companions also laughed, He addressed the girls jokingly.
“My dear girls, you may each come here as you wish and take back your garments. I’m telling you the truth and I am not joking with you, since I see you fatigued from executing austere vows. I have never before spoken a lie and these boys know it. Therefore, O slender-waisted girls, please come forward, either all together or one by one and pick out your clothes.”
