The name Yamuna recalls the river so dear to Radha and Krishna. There transcendental pastimes take place eternally. In this Maha-yuga Yamuna descends as Yamaraja’s twin sister. Hence the name Yamuna, which means “twin”.
The base of the name yama means self restraint, that is, a person capable of controlling himself.
