The favorable circumstances for bhakti are described in Srimad-Bhagavatam (2.9.36):
etavad eva jijnasyam
tattva-jijnasunatmanah
anvaya-vyatirekabhyam
yat syat sarvatra sarvada
He who seeks to know the Absolute Truth, the Divine and Supreme Person, must on every occasion, in every time and in every place, directly or indirectly, ask questions about the Absolute Truth.
There are two ways to free oneself from anarthas: directly, by following the rules, and indirectly, by observing the restrictions. The means of freeing oneself from the three anarthas – material desires, heart weaknesses and offenses – are described beginning with the following verses from the Upadesamrta.
The six impulses unfavorable to bhakti are listed in the first verse:
vaco vegam manasah krodha-vegam
jihva-vegam udaropastha-vegam
etan vegan yo visaheta dhirah
sarvam apimam prthivim sa sisyat
A sober person who can tolerate the urge to speak, the demands of the mind, the outbursts of anger, and the urges of the tongue, stomach, and genitals are qualified to make disciples all over the world.
The impulses mentioned here upset the bhajana. Repeated efforts must be made to control these impulses. After controlling them, one should worship Radha-Krishna in a lonely place.
