The Gradual Process of Hearing and Chanting the Name

Anubhava is derived from Vibhava

Vibhava haite anubhava

When vibhava is fully experienced, anubhava arises. These are all transformations of prema, which are made up of suddha-prema.

Rasa arises from Sthayi-bhava when activities in Vibhava are mixed with Sancari-bhava and Sattvika-bhava

Sancari-bhava o sattvika-misre vibhava kriya kare, sthayi-bhavai rasa haya

When sancari-bhava and sattvika-bhava arise and sthayi-bhava is added to them, rasa manifests. This is mentioned by all Sastra.

The gradual path to reach it

Taha paibara krama

I know that rasa is the essence of all things, the very essence of perfection. I accept that all Sastra say that it is the supreme goal of human existence.

By the mercy of a pure spiritual master, a Jiva who is desirous of bhakti achieves the fortune of attaining the Divine Names of the wonderful Divine Couple.

Recite those Names by chanting a prescribed number with tulasi beads, or chant in a kirtana aloud.

One should begin by chanting a grantha of the Name[1]. Gradually one will meditate on three lakhs of the Holy Names[2] and all desires will be fulfilled.

The Name gives shelter to the nine processes of bhakti, however kirtana and remembering are the best of all.

The different qualifications and activities that lead to the path of Arcana, hearing and chanting

Arcana-marga o sravana-kirtanera adhikara-bhede kriya-bheda

One who is attached to the path of arcana attains the perfection of sravana and kirtana[3].

One who has steadfast affection for the Name engages only in sravana, kirtana and smriti.

The gradual process of hearing and chanting the Name

Nama sravana-kirtana-smarane ye krama

Service, offering obeisance, the feeling of service, friendship and surrendering oneself arise naturally from association with the Name.

Sitting in a secluded place, you must renounce the ten offenses with the certainty that the nama and nami[4] are one in tattva.

In a few days, one attains the mercy of the Name, and the form of Sri Syamasundara will manifest.

When the Name and the form become identical during sadhana, during the chanting of the Name, the form appears in the heart at all times.

After a few days, the qualities of the Lord are added along with His form, and one enjoys those divine qualities while remembering Sri Nama.

[1] One grantha corresponds to four turns of the crown of 108.

[2] 1 lakh corresponds to 100,000 maha-mantras.

[3] Listen and chant.

[4] The Name and the Named.
