The chanting of the holy name spreads the moonlight that makes the transcendental lotus of good wishes blossom. In the Prabhasa Khanda it is written:
madhura-madhuram etan mangalam mangalanam
sakala-nigama-valli-sat-phalam cit-svarupam
sakrdapi parigitam sraddhaya helaya va
bhrgu-vara nara-matram tarayet krsna-nama
Of all auspicious things this hari-nama is the most favorable, it is the sweetest thing, and it is the eternal transcendental fruit of the Vedic tree of knowledge. O best of the Bhrgu, the holy name grants liberation even if chanted only once without offense, with faith or negligence.
The holy name is the life of transcendental knowledge. In the Garuda Purana it is written:
yad icchasi param jnanam
jnanad yat paramam padam
tadadarena rajendra
kuru govinda-kirtanam
O best of kings, if you want to attain the highest knowledge by which you can reach the supreme abode, then practice Govinda kirtana with steadfast faith.
The Heavenly Beings, in Srimad-Bhagavatam (3.5.40) state:
dhatar yad asmin bhava isa jivas
tapa-trayenabhihata na sarma
atman labhante bhagavams tavanghri
cchayam sa-vidyam ata asrayema
Oh Father! Oh Lord! Oh Personality of God! Living entities in the material world never find happiness, because they are overwhelmed by the three types of material suffering. They therefore take refuge in the shade of Your lotus feet, which are full of knowledge; therefore, we also take refuge in it.
Again, in Srimad-Bhagavatam (4.29.49), it is written:
sa vidya tan-matir yaya
A truly educated man rises to Krishna Consciousness.
Transcendental knowledge, by which consciousness is absorbed into Krishna’s lotus feet, is the original or real vidya, which cuts the bonds of avidya. Krishna’s holy name is the life of that wife, the Vidya, who focuses her mind on Krishna’s lotus feet. Chanting the holy name increases the ocean of happiness. This is highlighted in Srimad-Bhagavatam (8.3.20):
ekantino yasya na kancanartham
vanchanti ye vai bhagavat-prapannah
aty-adbhutam tac-caritam sumangalam
gayanta ananda-samudra-magnah
Pure devotees who have no other desires than to serve the Lord worship Him with total surrender, always chant and listen to His wonderful activities which are auspicious. Therefore, they are always immersed in the ocean of transcendental bliss. These devotees never ask the Lord for any blessings.
