The issue of evidence

Question:

I have a friend who wants to know the answer to the following question.

The Bhagavad Gita says that it was spoken 120,400,000 years ago, while we know that humanity appeared only two million years ago. Who is right and who is wrong? What are the evidences?

Answer:

There is no evidence that humans have populated the earth for two million years. These are assumptions that people accept because they are not interested in asking the more normal question, “What proof do you have of this?” The same question that your friend sent to me: what are the evidences?

A serious person asks this question and an equally serious person answers telling the truth: it is just an assumption; we have no proof.

In Sanskrit evidence is called pramana. There are different types of pramana, but the most important are eight. Vedic culture attaches great importance to this subject, and entire books have been written about it. So it’s a long topic that we will return to soon. The point that I wanted to make in this article is that the complicated reasonings that we find in our schoolbooks are not evidences of anything.

This is a section of the book “On a Silver Platter”.
