Worship of the Guru

The principle of Guru

Guru-tattva

The Diksa-Guru and the Siksa-Guru are both Krishna-dasa. They are residents of Vraja and manifestations of Krishna Shakti.

One should never consider the Guru to be an ordinary Jiva. The Guru is Krishna-sakti, dearest to Krishna, and is one’s eternal lord.

With this mindset, one must always have Guru-bhakti. By the power of such devotion one can go through the repeated cycle of births and deaths.

Worship of the Guru

Guru-puja

One must first worship the Guru and then Sri Krishna. Gurudeva gives the mercy of Lord Krishna[1].

Following the instructions of the Guru, one should worship Krishna carefully. Remembering Sri Guru, one should chant the Name of Krishna.

What kind of faith should one have in the Guru?

Gurute ki rupe sraddha kara ucita

Neglecting the Guru is an offense that hinders one’s bhakti.

Having equal bhakti for the Guru, Krishna and Vaishnavas, and taking shelter of the Holy Name, a suddha-bhakta quickly attains liberation.

With sraddha stable in the Guru and due to the power of Suddha-nama, the great wealth of prema is achieved.

In what situation should one reject the Guru

Kon sthane guru tyaga karite haibe

Through asat-sanga[2] a person’s eligibility to become a Guru can be ruined if events like the following occur.

In the beginning, one may be the best of Sadgurus[3], but after offending the Holy Name, one’s knowledge is destroyed.

He becomes envious of Vaishnavas and abandons nama-rasa. Eventually he becomes a slave to wealth and women.

By rejecting that Guru, and by the mercy of Sri Krishna, a disciple can again find a Sadguru chanting Suddha-nama.

[1] The Guru is worshiped by offering him asana (a seat), padya (foot washing), arghya (ceremonial water), snaniya (bathing), vastra (garments), and abharana (ornaments), and with his permission one then worships the Divine Couple. After that worship, prasada, like drinks etc., should be offered first to the Guru, and then to other Vaishnavas.

[2] Association with non-devotees and offenders of various kinds.

[3] Authentic spiritual masters.
